HALF NICE--What a difference a day makes! Last Saturday was really nice after a very foggy beginning and it landed itself as the perfect day to mow that ever growing lawn and enjoy a wonderful evening around a firepit after a tasty barbecue with friends. However by Sunday morning, the area was already saturated with heavy rains and it was a day to stay in and admire the lawn you'd mowed the day before and watch some football. Of course, if you'd spent Saturday washing your car, you were not too happy and you were keeping it off the road and in the garage!
While we had some heat show up, it also came with showers so the humidity has had us sticky and uncomfortable. It's been a mixed bag lately, that's for sure!
SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from September 30 through October 6 are Stewart Moonen, Linda Wright, Ginger Schmitz, Debbie Gribskov, Kari Claussen, Tony Silva, Valerie Bennett, Mary Wingate, Brandon Brown, Karen Healy, Kevin Vik, Joan Evenson, Joel Newton, Robert Blain, Barbara Worrell and Jesie Ellison.
Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Chip and Kathy Perkins, Larry and Joanne Longtain, Mr. and Mrs. Terry Cleveland and Quin and Connie Bassi.
BELATED--We want to wish a belated first double digit birthday to Shannon Lewis who turned 10 years old on September 26. Her special gift was a new four-wheeler and a big quad party was scheduled with about 20 people according to mom Robin Cothren. With hubby Wade's birthday on September 17, a double celebration was actually being planned. Belated wishes to the two of them and we hope they had a great birthday weekend.
THIS WEEKEND--As you are reading this, another month is coming to an end, which just seems impossible; the days are flying by. That being said, it means the Covered Bridge Dinner put on by the Extension office for the 4-H program is coming up this Saturday. Did you get your tickets? Hope so! If not, call the Extension office at 795-3278 and see if they have a spot still available for you. The weather promises to be decent so that will be a big plus--here's to a great evening!
GET WELL--We're keeping Mac Johnson and Angela Stensland in our thoughts and we wish them our heartiest get well and take care wishes.
CANDIDATES NIGHT--Last Monday the Skamokawa Grangers held a forum for the upcoming candidates in place of their regular meeting. It was nice to see such a great turn out as a rough head count yielded over 75 people. That was a very nice showing of concerned citizens who were eager to hear what the candidates had to say. Representatives Dean Takko and Brian Blake were in agreement to cuts in programs that we would not like but were coming regardless, due to budget shortfalls. Personally I was glad they were not promising quick fixes or instant cures as there is no way one person can do this, as our political system is a complex system of many people who must come to an agreement to change things. The local candidates showed up as well and we appreciate their participation.
Whoever your favorite candidate is, be sure and vote in November as your one vote can make the difference between a win or a loss.
COMING UP--If you missed the candidates in Skamokawa, the Grays River Grange will host a Candidates Forum on October 12 at 7 p.m. at the Johnson Park Building in Rosburg.
MEETINGS--The Skamokawa Grangers have two meetings this coming month--October 11 and 25-- so mark those dates on your calendar today. These meetings are open to the public so feel free to stop by. They start at 7 p.m.
OUT OF TOUCH--Sorry, but my computer is not working at this time, so if you haven't heard from me lately or I'm omitting some news you've sent me, that's the reason. I hope to have the sytem up and running soon--all of which depends on the repairman's appearance and the depth of the problems, which are not mine, but of my provider.
NICE CALL--Telephones still work and I was glad to get a call from former resident Joanne Amis Marson. She attended Wahkiakum High School and many of you may remember her. She currently gets The Eagle thanks to Stan and Becky Thacker so she keeps up on what's going on here. Joanne's sister was Clara Thacker.
Joanne had read that Jim Boerste had passed away recently and she said she grew up near the family in the Woodland area, prior to moving to Cathlamet, but over the years had lost track of the family so when the name of the youngest of nine kids was in my column she was interested in what I knew about him. Thus, the phone call and the long conversation that followed.
However, I could not give her much information I'm afraid. If anybody knows more about Jim or his sons and family, please give me a call and I'll pass the information onto Joanne, who it seems shared her name with one of Jim's siblings.
