It looks like the beginning of a long wet winter with an early start. At least it’s not really cold yet.
News from Naselle:
The Naselle Comet varsity football team won their game against Raymond last Friday night with a score of 20-7. Keep up the good work boys. A big thanks to all the supporters who have been traveling to the games.
Sports coming up this week include: Friday – football at home with South Bend at 7p.m .; Tuesday – cross country at Montesano at 4 p.m. and volleyball at home against Northwest Christian at 5:45 p.m.
Naselle Timberland Library will be participating in what looks like a fun Timberland Reads Together program coming up in October. Participants will be reading selections from Edgar Allan Poe and then attending free book discussions, performances and programs at your local library. Check with your local Timberland Library for more information.
Other news from the Westend:
Big News! The Rosburg Store is open! Monday marked the big day for the Bolton family and the reopening of the store. According to Norm, it didn’t go without a hitch. It took a little extra work to get the coffee pouring smoothly, but everyone was quite patient until it was done.
Though the store is open, they are still waiting on the final liquor license and for the gas pumps to be up and running. Stop in though and check it out. It’s great to have them open again.
I for one will try and do as much shopping there for everyday items as possible, and they are trying to carry as many locally produced items as they can. There is also a suggestion box on the counter if you have some ideas to share with them.
It appears that the Biosolids Ordinance, which was to have been voted on last Tuesday, was removed from the agenda on the 21st. Apparently the wording still wasn’t right, so another draft had to be prepared, and the commissioners didn’t have time to review it.
There was a public meeting at Johnson Park last Wednesday evening with about 20 people in attendance. The purpose of the meeting was to let folks know what has been accomplished so far by the Advisory Board (without funding), and to solicit new ideas and even a few old ones with which to move forward. Commissioner Blair Brady chaired the meeting and had a few good ideas himself.
Some of the suggestions included: build a covered picnic area adjacent to an amphitheatre/fire pit for story telling and music events, complete the nature/walking trail, complete the kitchen for cooking classes, canning classes, etc., possibly an assisted living facility, literature classes, extension courses, a west end annex for the Sheriff’s department, movie nights, little theatre, dances and concerts. All of these ideas are great, but need a few good folks to step up and help with the coordination, as was the case with the concert and sock hop earlier in the year.
With all the suggestions, there were a few questions about the upkeep and maintenance of the building itself. There are some pretty serious issues that need immediate attention such as the roof leaks. Apparently that problem is being addressed by the county and hopefully will be taken care of soon.
On a much happier note, there are a couple of things moving forward as I write this column. With a large donation of clothing, coats, etc. the Board is in the process of setting up a clothing bank. A tentative opening date is set for October 2 from noon to 2 p.m. The regular hours will be Mondays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m. For more information, please give me a call at 465-2960 or Penny Gregory at 465-2775.
Students from Naselle High School will be working with Jim Monteith (Grays River Valley Library volunteer librarian) on a Halloween project at Johnson Park. The plans are to have a haunted house manned by the students, trick or treating for kids in the different rooms of the school building, games, and a movie with pizza, popcorn and beverages. If you would like to make a donation or volunteer some time, call 465-2980. This could be the beginning of some more fun events for our kids.
We should have the pool table, foosball game and some other games set up for the older kids as well.
The Community Computer Center is doing very well and is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you are interested, they could use a few more volunteers to man those hours.
The Grays River Valley Library hours have changed for the fall and winter. It will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, open on Wednesday through Friday from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
On September 26, beginning at 2 p.m. the historical Deep River Church will host Gloria Linkey, noted historian of the area, for a lecture on the History of the Lewis and Clark women. She has been a history buff all her life and concentrates on info on the Lower Columbia Region and the Graveyard of the Pacific. There will be a free will offering.
Don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the annual Covered Bridge Dinner which will be held on October 2. Ticket prices will remain the same as last year, regular price - $35 and $25 for Grand Americans and Veterans. On the Westend tickets can be found at the Bank of Pacific. The shuttle bus will run again from Johnson Park. The proceeds will go for 4-H. If ticket holders wish to reserve specific seating--they may call the Extension office at 360-795-3278.
This is an awesome dinner with lots of preparation and volunteers working to make it so. Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to dine on a real covered bridge (with new siding as well) and benefit our local 4-H youth. Tickets are limited, so hurry and get yours.
