The Wahkiakum School District board of directors met last Wednesday and approved budgets for the 2010-11 school year.
Mike Quigley, vice-chair, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. No members of the public were in attendance.
Superintendent Bob Garrett made a presentation regarding the 2010-2011 budget for each of the district’s funds. Garrett responded to the few questions that board members asked.
The board approved the General Fund in amount of $ 4,920,028, the ABS fund in the amount of $169,730, the Debt Service Fund in the amount of $210,312, the Capitol Service Fund in the amount of $150,000, and the Transportation Vehicle Fund in the amount of $120,000.
There were no public comments or suggestions so Director Lee Tischer moved to approve the consent agenda items, seconded by Tina Schubert. The board approved Terrance Pharr as an assistant high school football coach for this summer and fall school year.
Pharr, a Wahkiakum High School graduate, graduated this year from Eastern Oregon University where he was a four-year starter on the Mountaineer football team.
There was a second reading of policies 2004, 2410, 3241, 3245, and 6530 and approval of 2010-2011 State Transitional Bilingual Instructional Application. The board also accepted the resignation of Chris Budd, high school assistant wrestling coach.
Grade School Principal Theresa Libby and High School Principal Dan Casler presented their suggested changes to their respective department’s student handbook. The changes include:
1) Schools now require students to give prior notice before bringing visitors to the school.
2) Parents are required to sign an “opt-out” form if they don’t want their child to use the school’s internet service.
3) Students may no longer use their cell phones during recess.
Schubert moved, seconded by Quigley, to approve the suggested changes to the student handbooks as presented.
There was no new business so Tischer moved, seconded by Schubert, to approve Resolution 0310-072110 (The 2010-11 budget for each of the schools' funds). The board approved the resolution.
Garrett reported that the budget status of each fund is on track. He said that after much confusion, including receiving inaccurate information from the teachers' health fund, “It appears our teachers' health insurance premiums are going to take a significant hit in September.”
He also said the school will advertise for two classified staff vacancies in the next two issues of The Eagle.
Schubert moved and Director Michelle Budd seconded the approval of the school’s General Ledger Accounts Payable, $45,152,81. The board also approved the schools' payroll totaling $263,102.43. Also approved was a Private Purpose Trust in the amount of $1000 and ASB Fund account totaling $3,497.83.
The board set the next date of the board meeting for August 18.
