What's happening at the Fair?

Fair Count Down Alert! Only six more weeks until Fair! When you go to the fairgrounds and pick up exhibitor tags and cards in the next few weeks, be sure to take a look at all the activities that are going on. We have some volunteers that are spending many hours pulling weeds, planting boxwood bushes, planting flowers and generally working on landscaping the fairgrounds. We can thank Jean Beerbower, Patty Dursteler, James Daniels, Sarah Czarnecki, and Jesse Aargon for keeping after this project. It’s looking great, no easy task with all the rain we have had!

We will start building the exotic animal barn this week. The new building will be for the little pocket pets and exotic animals that are brought to the Fair each year. These little animals are first pets for many children. Feeding and caring for them each day is a good way for them to learn about their animals. The new exotic barn will be an ideal place for them to exhibit their pets, and earn a ribbon too! Grab your hammer and come help us raise this new building, the more volunteers involved the easier a project becomes! For volunteer information call the fair office.

On July 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be a “Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic” at the fairgrounds. This event is sponsored by our local 4-H Clubs. If you have questions about the clinic call Veterinarian Dr. Lisa Bartel at 1-360-484-7228. The vaccines and a basic health check will be provided at the lowest possible cost.

The Rummage Sale in the Youth Building will be open on July 10 and 11, 9 a.m. until it closes. These items were just donated and may be of interest to you: a beautiful entertainment center, three TV’s, a washer, exercise equipment, glassware, small appliances, furniture, bed frames, and boxes of good stuff. In the T-building we are having a huge used book sale. We have hundreds of books and they are in excellent shape. If you love to read , I’m positive you can find a box full of interesting books to take home. We are selling the books and rummage sale items at low affordable prices. Bring your dog or cat in on July 10 and do a little bargain shopping too. All dollars raised by this Fair Board fund raiser will support the operation of our 2010 Wahkiakum County Fair.

The 4-H Horse Camp is July 10 and 11 at the fairgrounds. The focus of this camp-out is to have a fun week-end with your horse and friends. The 4-H’ers will spend time riding in the arena and also practicing Showmanship, as they get ready to compete for ribbons at our Fair.

Reminder: all animal entry forms are due on July 26. Bring them to the fair office or send them to: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O.Box 1, Skamokawa, WA 98647.

Patty Dursteler, our Princess Program Coordinator has openings for fair princesses. If you are 14 -19 years of age, could use a scholarship to help with college costs and would like to be a representative of the Wahkiakum County Fair please call the fair office. Patty will answer all your questions and get you enrolled into the program. The 2010 Wahkiakum County Fair Queen will receive a $500 scholarship.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is July 14, 7 p.m., T-Building, at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
