Naselle's class of 2010 ready to move on

It is beginning to look like the warmer weather will be here sometime soon. The sun has actually shown a few days in a row, as well. I also see plants poking their heads up out of the gardens, so maybe, just maybe we will have a summer this year.

News from Naselle:

High school graduation! A whole new chapter in life for the class of 2010, after 13 years in school, muddling through all the pains and joys of growing up to this point, and now—where to from here? Just coming this far has been a huge accomplishment for many and we need to commend them for all they have done so far. Some of these kids will go on to college, some will go into the military, some will go to work, and some will marry and have a family. No matter what these high school grads decide to do from here, they have been a success in high school by getting their diploma. More power to each of them in whatever they decide to do from here. Congratulations to the Naselle-Grays River High School Class of 2010. Be proud of who you are!

Thursday (tonight) at 7 p.m. students and their families will be treated to the annual Evening of Excellence, giving honors and awards to those students who have excelled this past year in many categories.

Saturday is the high school graduation ceremony at 4 p.m. held in the gymnasium.

Monday at 6 p.m. will be the 8th grade move-up ceremony.

Tuesday at 6 p.m. the outgoing kindergarten class will graduate. This is indeed a milestone in their young lives as well as that of their parents. Always lots of tears and hugs.

Wednesday is a fun day at Hay Stack Rock for the K-4th grader classes and the 8th grade class will venture to Wild Waves for the day. The last day of school is next Thursday. Happy Summer, everyone!

Amid all the fun things going on, a little business still has to take place. There will be a school board meeting on June 15 at 7 p.m.

Other news from the Westend:

It seems that another wonderful day for the Dollars for Scholars Sturgeon Derby/Barbecue and Rods and Reels Car Show has passed and another huge success. Students from both Naselle and Wahkiakum will be the big winners from this awesome event. Many thanks to all the volunteers, vendors, donors, fishermen/women, and especially the community for all the support that is always given for this event.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at the Rosburg Hall will enjoy home cooked chicken, spuds and gravy, veggies, hot rolls and dessert on the 9th. Oh by the way, I forgot to mention that Pat Potter’s son, Randy Lane celebrated his birthday last week on the 8th. Happy belated birthday, Randy. Pat and her volunteer group prepare lunches every Wednesday for seniors, and they are delicious. Good food and great company. Thanks, Pat and crew.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays senior meals are also served at noon at the Rosburg Hall and I want to thank Mary Saari for sending me the menus each month. It’s wonderful to have a community committed to our seniors and their nutritional needs. Menus for the coming week: Today (Thursday): pork chops, rice pilaf, Scandinavian veggies, fruit salad and lemon bars; Tuesday: supreme chicken, peas and carrots, buttered noodles, fruit jello and apple cobbler; next Thursday: Teriyaki beef sandwich, stir fry veggies, potato salad and sliced peaches.

Birthdays being celebrated this coming week include Nicholas Strange on the 10th; Tera Query on the 11th; Chad Gregory on the12th; Magan Wirkkala and Sue Thomas on the 13th; Lauren Rose and Alan Bennett on the 14th; Abbie Magee, Hannah Magee, Morgan Maddux and Rebecca Hernandez on the 15th; Mary Beth Queral , Steve Davis and Alicia Crozier on the 16th. Happy Birthday to each of you.

Happy Anniversary to the following couples this week: Hank and Linda Nelson on the 10th; Tom and Susan Gradt on the 11th; Steve and Gayle Gacke, Jim and Josie Eastham, Bob and Rosalie Eaton and Paul and Nikki Footh on the 15th. Wishing all of you a wonderful celebration.

Looks like a full weekend ahead for us as we will head to Redmond, Oregon for our oldest grandson’s high school graduation, and some visiting with all three of our daughters and one son plus seven grandkids and the great grandson. I always look forward to being with family, and hugging the little ones. At the same time we will celebrate our son’s girlfriend’s birthday, our oldest granddaughter’s 21st birthday and our great grandson’s first birthday. Lots of activity to stuff into two days, but worth taking the time to do it. Then on Saturday morning we head north to Ellensburg for our son’s girlfriend’s college graduation from Central Washington. Carl, our son, will graduate from Central next year with a major in Geography and a minor in Geology.

It appears as though we could have more sun than rain for the weekend, so get out there and enjoy!
