What's happening at the Fair?

I believe the Dollars for Scholars group must know what they are doing to be able to pick the one dry and warm day of the month to hold their event! Many dollars are raised to help our graduating seniors attend college by this event and it took many hours of work by this dedicated group to get everything ready. The Fairgrounds was packed with people, cars and lots of nice raffle prizes. I hope everyone got a chance to stop by and look at the beautiful cars, my favorite was a GTO. Fair board member Debbie Twiet volunteered to spend the day making sure all the maintenance needs were taken care of at the event. Thank you Debbie!

On June 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be a “Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic” at the fairgrounds. This event is sponsored by our local 4-H Clubs. Call Veterinarian Dr. Lisa Bartel before Saturday and make arrangement for other species of animals at 1-360-484-7228. The vaccines and a basic health check will be provided at the lowest possible cost. For dogs they will be offering the following: Distemper-Parvo-Lepto Vaccine $15/ Rabies Vaccine $12/ additional exam $15/ Toe Nail Trim $5/ Micro Chipping $35/ Worming-based on weight/Flea Treatment- based on weight. For cats they will be offering: Feline Distemper $12/ Leukemia $16/ Rabies Vaccine $12/ additional exam $15/ Toe Nail Trim $5/Micro Chipping $35/ Wormer- based on weight/Flea Treatment $5.50. Every dog and cat will be given a basic exam to ensure they are healthy enough to receive a vaccination, the additional exam is available to thoroughly evaluate your pet's condition. The next clinic will be on July 10 and also one August 7.

Jean Beerbower and I decided if people are going to be bringing their dog or cat to the Fairgrounds for the vaccination clinic, we better open up the rummage sale and see if we can raise some more dollars for the Fair. Bring your dog or cat in on June 12 and do a little bargain shopping too. We have been collecting new items and will be at the fairgrounds to receive donated items June 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again on June 17. All dollars raised will support the operation of our 2010 Fair.

Fair Countdown Alert! Only 10 more weeks until Fair. There is still plenty of time to do sewing, crafting, paintings, canning and take some photos. Keep your vegetables growing and flowers blooming. Be sure to bring an entry for largest vegetable, with all this rain the zucchinis will be huge. Last year there were 971 entries in the T-Building Adult Still-Life Open Class. This year, let’s try for 1000!

The next Fair Board fundraising event will be the “Silver Buckle Series Open Game Show” on June 19. The new arena will be filled with horses and their riders. The Skamokawa Grangers will be making strawberry shortcakes and deli sandwiches for all who come to ride or watch. If you would like more information about this event or a pre-registration form e-mailed to you call Becky Ledtke at 1-360-795-3434.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is July 14, 7:00 p.m., T-Building, at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
