Docent training coming soon to Redmen Hall

Those who have driven west on State Route 4 through Skamokawa and wondered about the history of Redmen Hall now have a chance to both learn about the building and pass that information onto others.

The opportunity will be given on June 26 when the Friends of Skamokawa docent training will educate volunteers about Skamokawa and Wahkiakum County and will feature local Governor's Heritage Award winner and historian Irene Martin.

The Friends of Skamokawa, founded 24 years ago, purchased the building which then underwent an extensive restoration project. When the building opened to the public, docents were trained and to this day they continue to be the driving force behind Redmen Hall’s success.

For those who have not stopped by; the first floor consists of a display of school house furniture with a real slate board, the archives, and a book and gift store. Housed on the second floor of Redmen Hall is the River of Life Interpretive Center consisting of a professionally produced permanent display of local history along with visiting exhibits and a stage for performances.

The volunteer docent’s job includes greeting, visiting about local history, and handling retail sales from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday or special occasions from February through December. Docents sign up for their own available days making their volunteerism as flexible as possible. The training for new docents will be held on June 26 from 9 a.m. until noon. Current docents are encouraged to attend as a refresher.

Inquiries are welcomed by calling Redmen Hall, (360) 795-3007 or by email, friendsofskamokawa@gmail.com. Training will be taught by Irene Martin, Rachael Wolford and Lisa Mooers.
