What's happening at the Fair?

Smashed and flattened! It was a mighty wind storm that knocked over the big cottonwood tree at the fairgrounds. We were lucky it fell where it did, it missed the cyclone fence and fell away from the restroom building. Sadly, the two balloon toss little buildings are history. Looks like another project for Jeff!

Some good things are happening too. Handyman Jeff Beerbower has built new steps and put new railings on the mini-stage. This is very important to entertainment committee chairman Jerry Ledtke, as he is planning to hire a country rock band for the Saturday night entertainment at the fair. This band will need a solid stage to play their music on. I can’t reveal the name of the band until negotiations are complete. I will say this band rocks and will get the audience to participate. Get ready Wahkiakum County this band is “alive!”

Does your dog come to you when called? Stay put when you ask him to? 4-H Leader Susan Patterson is teaching a dog obedience class at the fairgrounds. This class has been meeting on Saturdays at noon. There are four dogs and their 4-H handlers in the class now. Susan reports the kids are learning dog training skills and the dogs are responding to the attention and praise they receive. There will be a new session starting on July 10. You can call Susan to sign up or get more information about the dog obedience classes she is teaching at 795-8070. Not a 4-H Club member yet? Call 795-3278 to get information on how to join.

On June 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a “Dog and Cat Wellness Clinic” at the fairgrounds. Our local 4-H Clubs and Veterinarian Dr. Lisa Bartel from Naselle feel there is a need to get more cats and dogs in our county vaccinated. There will be a fairgrounds work party on May 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to get the fairgrounds ready for the Dollars for Scholars/Car Show/Sturgeon Derby June 5th event. Do you like to work outside and want to get involved in some very worthwhile community activities? Bring some gloves and we’ll see you at the fairgrounds on Thursday (today).
