Local Daughters of the Revolution honored

Cathlamet residents Margaret Strueby and Dixie Swart were honored this month at the Washington State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (WSSDAR) conference in Tacoma.

Strueby, the Mary Richardson Walker chapter vice-regent elect and past regent, and WSSDAR corresponding secretary- elect received first place in the Northwest division in the American Heritage Fiber Arts category. She won with an authentic hand-sewn Revolutionary War woman's costume.

Swart received first place in the Northwest Division in the Arts and Sculpture category for her 4'x6' oil painting entitled "Coming to America" which reflects the turbulent times emigrants faced on the high seas.

The chapter received an award for Outstanding Broadcast Coverage for their one-hour interview on Classic 1500 in Longview which included topics such as the history of Mary Richardson Walker, the MRW chapter, WSSDAR, and NSDAR.

The chapter received 15 other awards for Constitution week, national defense, service to veterans, genealogy, Children of the American Revolution, conservation and literacy promotion.

The first place awards will be sent to Washington D.C. where they will compete at the national level in July. The NSDAR's mission is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism.
