The Wahkiakum Mule golf team finished second in the district tournament last week and qualified several golfers for state tournament in Kennewick.
"The Mules had a great second day to grab second place at 10-team district championships," reported Assistant Coach Nick Vavoudis. "After finishing day one eight strokes behind leader North West Christian and six behind King's Way Christian, the stubborn Mules rallied to capture second place with a 719 total to King's Way Christian's 721. It wasn't enough to catch Northwest Christian's 714, anchored by repeating individual District Champion Nick Maddox who is on his way to play college golf at Arizona State University."
Earning state berths were seniors Cole Claussen, 173; 4th place, Andrew Weiler, 179, 8th place, and Cody Olsen, 180, 9th place.
In a surprising performance, freshman Brook (Bubba) Calvert earned his first trip to state with a 187 and 14th place, Vavoudis said. Also going to state were senior Justin McClain, 191, 18th as first alternate and freshman Peter Weiler, 193, 20th place.
"Peter answered a tough first round with a 23 stroke improvement, passing some 15 players and earning a third alternate berth," Vavoudis said. "Bit of trivia, Peter's older brother, senior Andrew, earned his first trip to state as an alternate as well."
Vavoudis added that while the Mules had to give up the district trophy they have held for three years, a consolation is that they are sending all six district entrants, four as players and two as alternates to the State Golf Championship in Kennewick on May 25 and 26.
Also sending players to state were NW Christian three players, King's Way, three and one alternate, North Beach three, and one player each, Three Rivers Christian, Willapa Valley , South Bend and Adna.
