Other news from the Westend:

There seems to be some confusion about the upcoming Grays River Habitat Enhancement District commissioner election. The election will take place on April 27 at the Johnson Park (old Rosburg School) in Rosburg, as the official polling place, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. This election is not a mail in election. You will not receive your ballot in the mail. You must go to the polling place to vote, unless you have contacted Wahkiakum County Auditor, Diane Tischer for an absentee ballot.

The six candidates have been invited to a Candidates Forum to be held at Johnson Park (old Rosburg School) on April 21 at 6:30 p.m. Please join us, meet the candidates and if you have any questions for them, this is the time to ask. Blair Brady will facilitate the meeting, candidates will have three minutes to speak and then take a few questions from the audience. County Auditor Diane Tischer will be on hand as well, to explain how the balloting will go, how many votes each landowner receives, etc. This is an important election for the landowners of the district, and a learning experience for all of us. Get involved, ask questions and vote.

Those running for the positions include: Position #1 – Delvin Fredrickson (incumbent) and Kurt Steinke; Position #2 – Poul Toftemark (incumbent) and Teri Satterlund; Position #3 – Bill Karwoski (incumbent) and Karen Bertroch.

For more information, call Diane Tischer at 465-2654 or the GRHED at 465-2960. Information is also posted on the Grays River Grange website.

Once again it’s time for the annual Spring Chicken Dinner put on by the Rosburg Community Club. This Sunday, the 18th, the place to be is the Rosburg Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. One of the biggest fundraisers of the year for this group insures that the hall will be maintained, scholarships will be awarded, as well as other local benefits. Dinner includes baked chicken with all the trimmings, the famous salad bar, as well as home made pie, cake and other delicious desserts.

Adult tickets are $10; youth from six-12 years are $5 and under six is $2. Remember this is a donation to benefit our local community.

Another event to mark on your calendar is the 26th Annual Great White Tail Run which is a fundraiser for our Wahkiakum County based 4-H program and all proceeds from this event will benefit the local program.

Flyers are available throughout the county and include a pre-registration form for the event, which will take place on Saturday, May 15, 2010. Registration will take place at 8:30 a.m. with the run beginning at 10 a.m. The run will be held at the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge in Skamokawa. For further information please call 360 465-2275 or 360 795-3278.

There will be a public hearing at the Rosburg Hall on May 3 at 6 p.m. regarding the permit to apply treated human waste (Biosolids) on property located at 118 Covered Bridge Road in Grays River. There seems to be many unanswered questions from the community and this is our opportunity to ask them. Mr. Kyle Dorsey with Department of Ecology will be on hand as will a representative from Evergreen Septic.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at the Rosburg Hall had a large crowd last week for their Easter Social, which included a drawing for a big Easter basket. I just happened to be the lucky winner. It was a wonderful meal and a great time socializing with some of our neighbors.

There was kind of a low note during the lunch, however, as we learned that someone had broken in to the hall and taken most of the food from the refrigerator that holds stuff for the senior lunches. I can only hope it was someone who needed the food more than our seniors. If that wasn’t the case, shame on you, for stealing from someone’s parents or grandparents, and I hope no one ever does the same to you. If you have any information regarding the theft, please contact the Sheriff’s office.

Seniors will dine on taco soup with all the trimmings and dessert on Wednesday, the 21st.

The Rosburg Senior Community Lunches sponsored by CAP at the same location serves senior meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This week's menus include: Thursday, the 15th – roast turkey, rice pilaf, peas and cauliflower and pineapple upside down cake; Tuesday, the 20th – sweet and sour chicken, pan fried soba noodles, stir fry vegetable, mandarin oranges and apricot bread pudding; Thursday, the 22nd – Swiss steak, steamed potatoes, green bean casserole, tossed salad and jelly rolls.

Well it’s definitely catch up on belated Happy Birthdays in Grays River – at least for four of our neighbors. First of all, a belated Happy Birthday to Colleen Haley whose big day was the 5th. Al George and Bob Paul (from the Grays River Café) celebrated their birthdays on the 10th, and Dave Henderson celebrated his big day on the 11th. See what happens when I go to California and get my mind wrapped around grandkids. Everything else that should be important goes out the window. Anyway, it’s wonderful to have friends like you guys (and gal), and I wish you many more wonderful years.

Birthdays being celebrated this coming week include Jessica Heriot, Baird Lehman, Shane Gilbert, Lori Fanoni, Walt Wirkkala and Earnest Wirkkala on the 15th; Kathy Jackson, Bill Bocker and Jennifer Mussick on the 16th; Gary Hamp, Sis Smith and Kyle Issac on the 17th; Sean Roberts, Philip Penttila, Jon Chapman, Tatum Littau and Carson Cooper on the 18th; Nathan Carlson, Bob Fauver and Blair Gray on the 20th; Mickey Bates on the 21st.

An extra special Happy Birthday to my wonderful neighbor on the hill, Virginia Wendelin, as she celebrates her birthday on the 17th. I wish you much sunshine, all the love of your family and friends, many fun hours with your little great grandson, and many, many more years to enjoy all that you hold dear. God Bless you, my special friend.

Happy Anniversary to Josh and Kelly Weston who celebrate their special day on the 18th. Wishing you many more.

It is with great sadness that residents of Grays River and the surrounding area will bid farewell to a pillar of our community, Keith Hillsbery. He passed away on Sunday morning and will be laid to rest in a graveside service at the Grays River Grange Cemetery tomorrow (Friday) at 11 a.m. My deepest sympathies to his wife, Kathy and all of his family and friends.
