Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Wahkiakum High School senior Cody Olsen was recently awarded the WIBCA 2B Basketball Player of The Year.
The award was presented at the 2010 All-state Game played at Mountlake Terrace High School, Everett.
Olsen averaged 25 points, seven rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game for the Mules, who finished the season 14-8 and in third place in the Central League, two games behind league champion Adna and one game behind eventual state champion Pe Ell.
Olsen ended his career at Wahkiakum as the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,623 points. He broke the school's single game scoring mark by putting in 43 points in a game against Clatskanie.
Olsen broke the school's all-time scoring record set by his father, Mule Coach Bill Olsen.
"I can say as a coach and father of Cody that this award comes with a lot of practice and hard work," Coach Olsen commented. "Cody put in thousands of hours in the gym, year round. He went to numerous summer camps and could be found in the gym at 7:00 in the morning and 11:00 at night.
In receiving the award, Cody thanked his teammates and said the award should be shared with them.
"If it weren't for all their hard work and support, this would not have been possible," he said. "I would also like to thank all the Mule fans for their support; it made the games so much fun."
Cody would like to play basketball in college and is interested in two programs. He is a two sport athlete, and other colleges have contacted him about playing golf.
