What's happening at the Fair?

The weather was perfect, we had good signs to direct people, and flyers advertising the Fair & 4-H Rummage Sale posted all over the county. This and the fact we all love a big rummage sale, made for a very successful one.

We thank our community for the wonderful items that they donated! The youth building was full of these treasures and we sold them at affordable prices. It was like going back 10 years in time, when the fair rummage sale was a part of our summers. It was a social gathering for all who came to shop, a place to spend a few minutes visiting with your neighbors. If you missed this huge rummage sale, we hope to see you at our next one in May. Details will be in my column next month.

We have Douglas fir trees for sale. There are 120 trees in each bag and we will sell them for $25 a bag. The rainy weather is perfect for planting and this is a bargain price on these two foot tall trees. Give me a call or leave a message on the fair answering machine if you would like to purchase a bag of these trees. The money from these trees is going to be designated for “fair entertainment.” We want to get some great bands to play on our stages again, so we are starting a special fund to help do this.

Neil Beerbower and son Jeff have ditched and placed pipe in the area by the arena that wasn’t draining properly. With that area about done, they borrowed my box scraper, attached it to the tractor and are currently working on getting the last high spots out of the arena.

This week I would like to direct my thoughts to the talented artists in our community. It must take at least two months (or more) to complete a painting and the fair is about four months away. Last year we needed about 15 more fine art exhibits in the T-building. If you are an artist, we need watercolor paintings, pencil drawings, chalk drawings, sculpture and oil paintings. We would love to display your work at our 2010 Wahkiakum County Fair.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is April 14, 7 p.m., 3rd floor courthouse meeting room. The public is always welcome to attend.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact me at 795-3434. You can also call 360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine also.
