Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Wahkiakum Mule athlete Brett Chaput, a sophomore, won the discus competition and set a new meet record with a throw of 144 feet at the Rainier Ice Breaker Meet Saturday. He also had a personal best in the shot put at 40'9" and finished sixth place.
He was the only Mule participant in the meet and scored 13 points by himself, finishing 12th out of 14 teams.
"Our first meet as a team was Wednesday (yesterday, after The Eagle had gone to press) at Ilwaco," said Mule Coach Mike Riley. "We have a good group of Mules that have been working hard in practice and are ready to get out and show their stuff.
"Some of the returning state competitors from last year's track season are Bryce McClain, 400m and 400m relay, Chaput, discus, Shay Bingham, pole vault, Jeff Vik, 400m relay alternate, and Jordyn Wirkkala, 400m and 800m relay alternate.
"Some key returning Mules are Shelby Felton, Blaine Land, Zach Schnieder, Chris Hokkanan, Connar and Collan Riley.
"New Mule team members include Evelyn Clark, Ashley Helms, Gabby Mann, Ashley Mann, Tylor Russell, Sebastian Sadlier, and Adam and Ben Vasion.
"I'm very impressed with the attitude and good work ethic of this year's team. Coach Loren Davis has been doing a fantastic job with the throwers and jumpers," Riley said.
