What's happening at the Fair?

It’s only March, yet it’s time to start crafting, sewing and creating the exhibits that we enjoy during our fair. If you put your special fair items together throughout the next months, you will have more items to exhibit and not feel so rushed when August arrives. If you are new to our county, entering items in the fair is easy, doesn’t cost money, and it’s a great place to showcase your talents.

This year we would like to have more sewn items in the Open Adult exhibits to display. If you are a talented seamstress we look forward to filling this department up with your dresses, vests, blouses, skirts, shorts, aprons, costumes and other apparel.

The Helping Hands Food Bank (currently located at the fair T-building) is looking for a new place to move into in the near future. Mary and her staff need a place they can stay year-round and we need your help to find this new place. The food bank doesn’t need a lot of space, a 20’ by 30’ area would be enough. If you have a building they can use or an idea please call.

We have received some nice donated items for the April 10-11 4-H and Fair rummage sale. We will be collecting items up to the day of the sale, call 795-3278 or 795-3480 if you have something you would like to donate.

We have a big wonderful arena and plan to get some horse events scheduled for this summer. Ginger Moonen is working with the Fair Board to create a new fund raiser for our fair called the “Silver Buckle Gaming Series.” It is still in the planning stages, it will be three gaming show events, one in June and July, then the finale during our Fair in August. We are looking for individuals and businesses to sponsor awards, if you would like to be a sponsor please call. We will announce your name or business as we award each rider.

The Wahkiakum County Fair Royalty Program will soon be accepting applications for 2010. If you are 14 years or older and live in the Wahkiakum/Naselle area you may apply. More details soon.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is March 31, 7 p.m., 3rd floor courthouse meeting room. The public is always welcome to attend.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Becky at 795-3434. You can call 360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine also.
