Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
To The Eagle:
Like many other users of Vista Park, my family and I were very disappointed to hear of Steve McClain's termination.
I grew up in Skamokawa, my dad Burtell Anderson and Jim Oatfield were on the school board when the first dredgings of sand were piled on the beach. At that time, a group of volunteers cut brush and used a Cat donated by Grays River Logging to expand the usable property of the Skamokawa Grade School.
Later after the school had closed, we, like many others, started camping at the new park. Steve's mom was in charge at that time and Steve was always tagging along. He has been a fixture at the park basically since day one.
Now for some reason unbeknownst to most of us he will no longer be there. What happened?
He does a good enough job for 28 plus years and now he isn't qualified to do the job anymore? It has taken all these years for the port commissioners to determine Steve isn't capable of running the Park?
Steve did a good enough job to keep guests coming back year after year, building traditions in their own families. Anytime you deal with the public as he has done for all these years and still have the support he has, Steve has to be doing something right.
I think the commissioners need a little education on how to deal with the public and manage things themselves.
Maybe the biggest problem we as users of the park have is that we don't live in Wahkiakum County so therefore we can't vote on who represents us on the port commission. If we could, I feel there would be some changes made and Steve would not be one of them.
