What's happening at the Fair?

Improvements are starting to go from the planning stage to the actual project in motion stage at our fairgrounds.

Neil Beerbower is chairman of the Fair Boards Arena Committee. His first big project this year is to get rid of the standing water by the front of the arena.

County Building and Planning Manager Chuck Beyer and Neil have been consulting back and forth to finalize the project plan.

Last weekend Neil and his son Jeff used a backhoe to start digging through rocks and dirt to make a ditch. They will be installing pipe into the ditch that will drain the standing water toward an already existing system, that drains that area of the fairgrounds. The Wahkiakum Board of County Commissioners approved the purchase of two loads of drain rock for the project. It will be used to fill the ditch. Thank-you Dan Cothren, Lisa Marsyla and Blair Brady! The Fair Board would like to thank Neil and Jeff Beerbower for all their hours of planning, getting supplies and arranging to bring in equipment. We thank Bill Chamberlain for looking over the project and sharing ideas, as he has lots of experience finding solutions to water problems.

We are creating a network of volunteers and we’d like you to join us as we build, paint and garden this spring. If you are new to our community this is a good opportunity to meet neighbors and make new friends.

On March 21 at the Grade School, in the multi-purpose room, the Wahkiakum Fair Foundation will be serving a chicken dumpling dinner cooked by Janet Bryan. Along with the dinner you will be served delicious pies made by Marie West and Leota Souvenir. There will be entertainment and raffle drawings. The cost of the dinner is $8 per person. The Wahkiakum Fair Foundation is an independent non-profit foundation created to support the operation of the Wahkiakum County Fair.

The fair office is now open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact me at 795-3434.

You can call 360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine. I try to check the machine every three days. Thank-you for the items that you have been donating to the April 10-11 4-H and Fair Board rummage sale.
