Cathlamet resident, James Malcolm Shoemaker, 80, passed away February 28, 2010 at his home. He was born March 26, 1929 in Louisiana, Miss. to James and Mary Jane (Ulery) Shoemaker. In 1974 he married Irene (Vetter) Shoemaker in Reno, Nev. They moved to Cathlamet in 1991.
Jim served in the U.S. Marines during WWII. He was stationed in Okinawa and on the USS Missouri at the signing of the Peace Treaty. He was a member of the American Legion.
Jim worked as a millwright, retiring in 1992 from the Carpenters and Millwrights Union. He enjoyed boating, fishing and was interested in aviation. He and Irene loved traveling, In the U.S. as well as Europe and Mexico as part of his work installing newspaper presses.
He is survived by his wife Irene at home; a stepson, Greg Milholland of Washougal; stepdaughter, Lynn Sirrine of Bend, Ore .; a cousin, Russell Mathis of Kansas City, Miss .; and two step-grandchildren, Erin Nikkila of Vancouver and Derek Milholland of Las Vegas, Nev.
No services will be held at his request. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim Shoemaker’s name to Cathlamet First Aid Division, P.O. Box 142, Cathlamet, WA 98612.
