The Naselle Comets pulled away from the Wahkiakum Mules in the fourth quarter to claim a 65-42 win in the SW Washington Class 2B Basketball Tournament on Saturday.
The win kept the Comets alive in district play; they took on the Mossyrock Vikings Tuesday evening in Centralia.
The loss ended the Mules' season.
The teams traded the lead throughout the game. The Comets led 19-13 after one quarter, but the Mules outscored the Comets 16-9 in the second quarter to lead 29-28 at haltime.
Naselle took control of the key in the third quarter and outscored the Mules 14-11 to lead 42-40 after three quarters. The Comets, aided by two Mule technical fouls, went on a 15-4 run in the final period and outscored the Mules 23-12 to post the final 65-52 score.
Mule Cody Olsen scored 28 points to lead all scorers. He had 17 points in the first half to power the Mule offense. He finished his high school career with 1,623 points, a school record. Also scoring for the Mules were Wyatt Parker eight, John Chambers five, Justin McClain four, Ty Bain three, and Troy Howard and Ryan Helms, two each.
Olsen also had nine rebounds, five steals and five assists. Parker had eight rebounds, and Chambers, five.
For the Comets, Austin Burkhalter scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Leonel Mendoza scored 17 points, John Hines nine, Manny Lopez eight, Alan Erickson four, and Drew Macy and Devin Thompson two each.
