Manager dismissed

At the end of their meeting Februrary 16, Port District 2 Commissioners Kayrene Gilbertsen, Carlton Appelo and Brian O'Connor adjourned to executive session with Manager Steve McClain and Attorney Jennifer Hanigan.

The board then voted to fire McClain, who has worked for the the district 28.5 years. On Wednesday, Hanigan accompanied him as he cleared his personal effects from the office.

The district faxed this statement to The Eagle on Wednesday afternoon, "Port District No. 2 of Wahkiakum County ended its employment relationship with former District Manager Steve McClain on February 16. Board President Brian O'Connor stated, 'We are very grateful for Steve's loyalty over his 27 years working for Port 2.' The District looks forward to a successful year and will transition to new management with no interruption in operation of Vista Park in Skamokawa or Svensen Park on Puget Island."

McClain said this week the termination took him by surprise, and he would consult an attorney about it.

" The Port Manager serves at the pleasure of the port Commission. If they feel they need to terminate their 'relationship' with you, they may, without warning.

"I guess after 28.5 years, it was my time. I want to express my sincere thanks to the community for their support over the years. They, as much as anyone, have made Vista Park and Svensen Park successful. Will I miss the work? The people yes, the 200 plus hours a month in the summer, no. For now, I look forward to spending more time with my family and my friends."
