Comets take lead

On Tuesday, the battle for first place in the Pacific League boys basketball standings took place in a crowded gym in Naselle, with the Comets beating South Bend 69-55.

The Comets spurted out with a quick basket and never looked back. After the first quarter, the Comets led 19-8. South Bend closed the gap to two points, Naselle 27, South Bend 25 at the half.

The Comets made a great run in the third, up 16 at one point and ending the quarter leading 47-37.

The fourth was a real battle, heavy with South Bend defense. Some very clutch free throws in the last few minutes gave the Comets a decisive 69-55 win and first place in league standings.

The Comets' seniors were also recognized at their last home game.

Austin Burkhalter led the Comet scoring with 18 points. Drew Macy had 13, John Hines and Leonel Mendoza 12 each, Manny Lopez eight, Ollie Baker three, Alan Erickson two and Jesus Martinez one.
