The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team fell behind the Pe Ell Trojans early last Friday and lost a 69-52 Central League basketball game.
The Mules had a share of first place in the tight league standings; the loss and other teams' wins dropped them to fourth place.
Pe Ell outscored the Mules 24-10 in the first quarter and had a 24-point lead at one point in the second quarter. They led 39-21 at halftime. The Mules bounced back in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 25-13 to close the gap to 52-46, but the Trojans held on down the stretch.
Cody Olsen scored 16 for the Mules; Wyatt Parker had 11, Justin McClain eight, Troy Howard six, Ty Bain five, and John Chambers, Brett Chaput, and Andrew Weiler two each.
McClain grabbed eight rebounds and blocked seven shots, and Parker had eight rebounds.
The Mules will host the White Pass Panthers this Friday, 7 p.m. in the team's last home game of the year.
They head to Mossyrock next Tuesday, to Adna on February 6, and at Napavine February 10.
Junior varsity
The Mule junior varsity has won its last three games.
On January 18, they won 58-40 against King's Way. Brandon Fudge led the team's scoring with 17 points. Zac Pierce had 11, Andrew Weiler 10, Lars Blix nine, Ryan Helms and Cole Claussen three each, Eli McElroy and Peter Weiler two each, and Steven Doumit one.
On January 19, the JV's won 69-18 at Toutle Lake. Chaput led the scoring with 13 points; P. Weiler had 11, Pierce 10, Claussen and Blix seven each, McElroy six, Helms five, Doumit four, and Fudge three.
On January 22, the Mules won 78-18 at Pe Ell.Fudge, P. Weiler and Chaput each had 12, Blix 11, Claussen 10, Doumit eight, Helms six, McElroy five and Pierce three.
