These calendars make great gifts, and the proceeds benefit our kids. Pick one up and keep track of local birthdays and anniversaries.

Join the Timberland Regional Library’s 13th annual Adult Winter Reading program, that runs until March 15. What a great way to enjoy these cold winter afternoons and evenings, with a good book, a nice cup of coffee or tea next to a warm fire, and possibly win some nice prizes.

Brochures can be obtained at all Timberland libraries, and include rules, entry forms and a list of prizes. For each five books or audio books you finish during the program period, complete a form and turn it in at a Timberland library by March 15. Participants must be 18 or older and have a current Timberland library card.

A drawing will be held on March 22 for the prizes that include overnight resort getaways and book and beverage baskets. The local Timberland libraries will also award additional prizes that have been donated by businesses and Friends of the Library Groups.

Other news from the Westend:

Last Friday, the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board management group met in Camas, and members of the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District traveled to the meeting. On the agenda was a motion to adopt the Grays River Salmon Habitat Restoration Technical Report (formerly known as the Grays River Community Habitat Restoration Plan developed by LCFRB and the Work Group). The majority of landowners spoke out loudly against the original plan and with little or no landowner support, the LCFRB/work group decided to change it to a technical plan. After some discussion, and some omissions requested by the GRHED members and Commissioner Blair Brady, the LCFRB management board accepted the report but it will be just a report, with no authority when grants are applied for. In other words, the plan that was proposed in October 2008, is now just a report.

Many thanks for the concise comments regarding the plan document, from several landowners, in writing, to the Board members. Thank you also to our Commissioner Brady, who voted against accepting the report because most of his constituents were against it. Our community is fortunate to have support from most of our elected officials.

If anyone is interested in seeing a copy of the technical report contact me or Eli Asher at the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board. It is a rather lengthy document.

Looking for something to do for a few hours a week/month? There are lots of things going on here on the Westend. Johnson Park is beginning to show signs of more happenings. There are activities going on several days each week. Monday, a card group meets to play cards and enjoy snacks. Tuesday and Thursday, the Community Computer Center is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Scott Braman has a group in for yoga. Thursday, at 7 p.m. you can join the Johnson Park Art Group for an evening of fun with different art mediums.

Our new refrigerator will be delivered this week for the Johnson Park kitchen, but we are still looking for a triple sink. If you have any information on where we can get one at a reasonable price or donated, please contact me.

The Johnson Park Advisory Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Computer Center and the meetings are open to the public. Are you interested in volunteering for some of the ongoing projects, or just helping out? Contact Tim Virkkala or Norm Bolton.

The Rosburg Community Club has been around for many years and has the responsibility of keeping the Rosburg Hall maintained, as well as doing many other community services in our community. This small, hard-working group meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Rosburg Hall. Are you interested in hearing about their projects, or helping out? Contact Sonja Kruse or come to one of the meetings. Membership to the group is free and you won’t find a nicer bunch of folks.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at the Rosburg Hall will dine on hot dogs with sauerkraut, mixed veggies and dessert on the 20th.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the Rosburg Senior Community Lunches sponsored by CAP are served. Menus for the next week include: today – Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, broccoli Normandy and cherry cobbler. January 19 – sausage spinach strata, roasted potatoes, broiled tomatoes and raspberry cheesecake. January 21 – chicken divan, pasta primavera, fruit salad and cookies.

Don’t forget to get a new burn permit for 2010 before you decide to start a fire. This year you can get a permit by visiting the Grays River Café and filling out a form. Why not enjoy a cup of coffee and a piece of their homemade pie while you’re there? Bob and Bev are doing a wonderful job at the café, and making it a great place to eat and visit with neighbors. Remember let’s support our local businesses.

Birthdays being celebrated this coming week include: Dylan Wirkkala, Cody Wirkkala, Evan Hendrickson, Ed Rafferty and Haleigh See on the 14th; Dakota Phillips and Noreen Fitts on the 15th; David Gradt on the 16th; Patty Beaulaurier and Lilly Shelter on the 17th; Jaymi Whalen, David Helvey, Myrtle Rose, Kyle Saari, Greg Nelson, Crystal Gardner, Katelend Busse and Linda Gollersrud on the 18th; Andy Bighill, Amy Reach, Craig Kent, Shannon Maki, Tom Gradt, Evert Ehrlund, Jeff Tarabochia, Shelby Leeland and Debbie Saari on the 19th; Stacy Katyryniuk on the 20th. Wishing each of you a very Happy Birthday.

A little bird told me that I left out an important birthday on December 16. I could have sworn that I had included a Happy Birthday to Alan Gregory on that date, so I went back and checked my copy of The Eagle. I was right, but apparently turning 60 years old is taking its toll on poor Alan. They say your eyesight is one of the first things to go. Happy 60th Birthday, Alan (again).

Happy Anniversary to the following couples this week: Phillip and Nancy Wirkkala on the 14th and Stanley and Helen Rangila on the 17th. Wishing you many more.
