Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
This week marks the end of our 102nd fair theme contest. Chosen by the fair board at yesterday’s monthly meeting, the winner will receive a check for $25. Thank you to everyone who participated and a special thanks to the Wahkiakum Fair Friends for donating the $25 first prize. Due to print deadlines the winning theme will be announced in next week’s column.
Yesterday’s meeting was also the first board meeting of 2010 under our new president Becky Ledtke. Having volunteered as a fair superintendent for the past 10 years, Becky is the perfect person to help guide the board while we face this difficult economic climate.
This year the board and I plan to work together with other non-profits to showcase the fairgrounds, aiming to provide the community with a wide variety of services. If you’d like to use the fairgrounds for a non-profit fundraiser or a community themed event, contact the fair office today 795-3480.
Looking back on the ups and downs of last year I think in many ways the collapse of the commercial building was a blessing in disguise. The new arena has ignited our community spirit, reminding us to give thanks.
For example, since the completion of the new arena I’ve been contacted by various community members who wish to give back. Some have offered free horse riding lessons or a free dog training course, while others have kindly donated bulbs or volunteered at fundraisers.
As we start work on this year’s Premium Fair Book I am reminded of all the volunteers, local businesses and families which come together in support of the fair each year. Thank you all for your time, energy and Wahkiakum spirit.
The fair board is looking for new volunteers and potential members to join one of the new fair committees. Whether it’s entertainment, the princess program or the fair book, this is your chance to help make a difference and let your voice be heard.
Do you want to go to college but need a little help getting there? Why not join the 2010 fair royalty program? The King and/or Queen receive a $500 scholarship. It’s a great way to meet new people and gain experience for your resume.
The next Wahkiakum County Fair board meeting is February 10 at 7 p.m. in the 3rd floor meeting room of the courthouse. The public is always welcome to attend.
The fair office is now open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds please contact the fair office 360-795-3480 or leave a message on my cell phone 360-355-7743.
