News from Naselle:
Five teams from Naselle competed in an ESD 113 knowledge bowl meet held at Grays Harbor College on Monday, January 4th. Forty-two teams from Hoquiam, Elma, Montesano, North Beach, Lake Quinault, Wishkah, Ocosta, Willapa Valley, South Bend, and Naselle competed in the January 4th knowledge bowl meet. The Naselle team “Vulcan” which was comprised of Cody Cooley, Calen Thompson, Alana Darcher, Nathan Reitz, Emily Green, and Samantha Bauer placed 6th overall and 3rd among B teams. At the end of regular competition, Vulcan was tied with an Ocosta team for 5th place and lost by a single point in a 15-question tiebreaker. The Naselle team “ICRF” placed 19th overall and 9th among B teams. This team was comprised of Kyle Mullins, Silas Goforth, Keely McGuire, Rochelle Benford, and Tara Joyce. The Naselle “Riders of Rohan” (Trevin Leeland, Seth Scrabeck, Levi Wasmundt, Chandler Chapman) placed 22nd overall, 12th among B teams, and only three points behind “ICRF.” The Naselle “Council of Cool Kids” (Nathan Carlson, Alex Bighill, Cassie Van Dusen, and Kai Leach) placed 30th overall and 17th among B teams. The Naselle team “Name” was comprised of team captain JP Cooley, Mary Wirkkala, and Allison Todd. “Name” placed 36th overall and 22nd among B-teams. The Naselle team “Vulcan” will participate in a Southwest Washington regional meet to be held at the ESD 113 office in Olympia on February 5th with a chance to qualify for state competition in Spokane in March. This was the final regular season knowledge bowl meet.
Congratulations to all the teams, and good luck to team “Vulcan” in their attempt to go to Spokane. These kids put a lot of time and effort into Knowledge Bowl, and are to be commended for their efforts.

It appears that someone had a little problem with either his or her brakes or their accelerator last Sunday night or early Monday morning. As a result, Timeless Amenities in Appelo Center, now has a plastic covered wall and window, until repairs can be made. The shop is still open for business, and if you have any information on who may have done this or how it might have happened, you are asked to call the Pacific County Sheriff.

Well, it’s a new year and if you are planning on doing any burning, you will need a new burn permit. To make it easier for the Westend, you can get a 2010 permit at the Grays River Café. They are open Thursday through Sunday each week. Check out the great food while you’re there.
On Friday, the 8th, the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board management team will meet in Camas at 1:00 p.m (Camas Police Department, 2100 NE 3rd Avenue). On the agenda is Item #1 that recommends adoption of the Grays River Salmon Habitat Restoration Technical Report (formerly known as the Grays River Community Habitat Restoration Plan) and to incorporate it into the LCFRB 6-year Habitat Work Schedule. New name, same plan that the majority of landowners have said “no” to. Representatives of the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District will attend the meeting. The Grays River Habitat Enhancement District will hold their regular monthly meeting on January 13t at 6 p.m. in the Grays River Grange Hall. This month’s meeting will include a presentation by Columbia Land Trust on the final plans for the project on Mill Road. Property owners who are directly affected are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will dine on Pat’s famous taco soup with all the trimmings and a yummy dessert. She wants to wish everyone a Happy New Year and to thank everyone for supporting the Wednesday lunches.
The Rosburg Senior Community Lunches sponsored by CAP also meet at the Rosburg Hall. Their menus for this week include: Thursday, the 7th (today): chicken spinach enchilada, beans and rice, fiesta veggies, carrot/pineapple salad, cake and ice cream. Tuesday, the 12th: beef pot roast, boiled potatoes, peas and carrots, orange wedges and brownies. Thursday, the 14th: Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, broccoli Normandy and cherry cobbler.
These two groups make it possible for seniors to enjoy a nutritional lunch three days a week as well as socializing with their neighbors. Check them out, good food and great company.
