The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team won a game and lost a game this week.
Last Thursday, the Mules overwhelmed visiting Clatskanie for a 70-49 decision. The Mules ran to a 21-8 first quarter lead and weren't challenged.
"We out rebounded them the whole game," said Coach TIffany Niemeyer. "The girls played solid defense, great team defense. They were patient and kept their composure throughout the game."
Halie Boyce led the scoring with 21 points. Jordyn Wirkkala added 18, Evelyn Clark 10, Ashley Helms eight, Brieanna Olsen six, Shelby Felton three and Blaine Land two.
Helms and Clark each had 10 rebounds. Helms had six assists; Felton made four. Clark had four steals, and Helms had three.
The Mules made 24 of 55 shots, 44 percent, and 16 of 29 free throws, 55 percent.
On Tuesday, the Mules lost their first game of the season, a 43-40 setback to the Toutle Lake Ducks.
The Mules led 22-17 at one point in the second, but the offense struggled from there against Toutle's defense.
Olsen hit two three point shots in the fourth quarter; the last tied the game 40-40 with 1:49 left. Toutle kept the Mules scoreless from there to win.
Boyce led the Mule scoring with 10 points. Olsen and Wirkkala each had eight, Felton five, Clark and Land four apiece, and Rebecka Patching one.
Wirkkala had five rebounds; Helms made four assists, and Clarke had five steals.
The Lady Mules were scheduled to entertain Vancouver Christian next Monday, but the visitors can't field a team. Instead, Monday's action will be two quarters of junior varsity boys basketball, beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by varsity boys.
