Guardrail project nearing completion

The contractor installing new guardrail along SR 4 between Skamokawa and Longview should finish the work in early December, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

"To give some round numbers, we are installing over two miles of new guardrail, raising over seven miles of guardrail, replacing around 200 guardrail terminals, installing new rail on some bridges, and doing an extensive amount of guardrail repair," said Lori Figone, assistant area engineer.

"There were a few issues we ran into that delayed the time line of the project. There was an area of utility conflicts and many areas where the guardrail couldn't be installed as set out in the plans. This was largely due to lack of usable space alongside the highway and underground obstructions. The schedule of the project was extended to allow for the additional work associated with the guardrail upgrades, repairs and redesign efforts."
