The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to the Adna Pirates Tuesday night in a battle for second place in league standings.
The Mules rolled through the first game to win 25-18, but the Pirates warmed up and were able to handle the Mule attack after that, winning the next three games 25-19, 25-22, and 25-23.
The match was the last home match for Mule seniors Halie Boyce, Evelyn Clark, Ashlenn Coleman, Ashley Helms, Rebecka Patching and Jordyn Wirkkala.
Wirkkala make 15 kills at the net; sophomore Blaine Land hit 16. Setter Halie Boyce made 24 assists.
Last Thursday, the Mules won a 3-2 match at Mossyrock 25-21, 18-25, 28-26, 18-25 and 15-13.
"Both teams played extremely hard, and it was a well-played match by both sides," said Mule Coach Jeff Rooklidge.
Wirkkala led the Mules with 13 kills and 17 service points. Blaine Land had 10 kills and 16 service points.
"Amy Gawith was tough on the net with several key blocks," Rooklidge said. " Boyce ran our offense well getting 23 assists. Ashley Helms made some key digs and great saves on defense to slow down Mossyrock's big hitters. Patching had one of her best matches of the season with several timely kills (six total) and some good blocks at the net.
"The gym was packed and very loud as it was Mossyrock's senior night, and the Mules showed a lot of determination and resilience coming back from deficits and not giving up."
The Mules and two other teams are in a scramble for district tournament playoff berths.
"Toutle Lake is undefeated on the year and in first place," Rooklidge said Monday. "Mossyrock, Adna and ourselves are all fighting for second, third and fourth place seeding into the district playoffs.
The Mules end the regular season tonight (Thursday) at Napavine.
