What's Happening at the Fair?

I’m delighted to confirm that all 2009 fair premium checks have been mailed. If for some strange reason you’ve not received your check please contact the fair office so I can confirm your details.

We had an amazing turnout this year with more entries than ever before. Both the T-Building and Youth superintendents reported a sharp increase from last year, with lots of new participants. Congratulations to all of our exhibitors. Enjoy your hard earned cash!

I hope to complete the state commissioner’s report next week and will confirm our 2009 attendance once all the numbers are in. We received our evaluation from the state and performed very well. The report was reviewed during the last fair board meeting and is available upon request.

Don’t miss the Wahkiakum Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue fundraising event scheduled for this Sunday, September 20, from 1 – 5 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Bring your pet down and take advantage of the onsite microchip clinic. Open from 1:30 -4:30 p.m., each microchip generates a $20 donation to the Search & Rescue team.

Next month we’ll be hosting the Second Annual Oktoberfest. Scheduled for October 17, this year we’ve included a Harvest Celebration, focusing on family themed activities. There will also be a beer garden for adults 21 and over but this will only be open during the evening. More details to come so watch this space.

I would like to clarify the role of the two fair boards. The Wahkiakum County fair board’s (WCF) purpose is to help plan and assist the fair manager in the organization and management of the annual fair. The Wahkiakum Fair Association (WFA) was formed to help raise funds but also awareness of the facilities available within the fairgrounds. The Wahkiakum Fair Association is a registered non-profit and is chaired by former fair board member Mike Mouliot. The WFA is meeting next week to brainstorm fundraising ideas, so if you’d liked to become involved please feel free to join in.

The WCF board meets every month at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday in the 3rd floor meeting room of the Wahkiakum County courthouse. Members of the public are always welcome.

Next year I’d really like the community to be more hands on in the planning of the fair and invite you to join one of the new committees I’ve set up for 2010. So far I’ve established an Entertainment, Fundraising, Fair Royalty / Princess, Animal Recruitment and Premium Book committees. If you’d like to join or have an idea for another committee, contact the fair office today 360-795-0438.

It’s not too late to donate flowers for the fair. We have tons of new flower beds begging for some action. If you have any to spare call the fair office. We’ll even come and pick them up!

Do you want to go to college but need a little help getting there? Why not join the 2010 fair royalty program? The King and/or Queen receive a $500 scholarship. It’s a great way to meet new people and gain experience for your resume. Call or email the fair office for more information.

Please be aware that the fair office is now open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds please contact the fair office or leave a message on my cell phone 360-355-7743.
