The Youth Building at the 101st Wahkiakum County Fair was a busy place with contests, community service and 4-H in Action participants.
Results of the 4-H Judging Contests are:
Clothing: Primary--Lillian Zimmerman, Rainbow Ribbon. Junior--Haley Footh, top blue; Nanea Carroll, blue; Alexis Nortrup, blue. Intermediate--Savannah Zimmerman, top blue; Abbie Eaton, blue; Jem Dyer, blue. Senior--Cody Cooley, top blue; Azery Gribskov, blue.
Foods: Junior--Katie Johnson, top blue; Makayla Matthews, blue. Intermediate: Alex Johnson, top blue, Makenzie Matthews, blue; Jordan Smith, blue; Abbie Eaton, blue; Jem Dyer, red. Senior: Cody Cooley, top blue.
Garden: Primary-- Lillian Zimmerman, Rainbow Ribbon; Junior-- Chloe Zimmerman, top blue; Alexis Nortrup, blue. Intermediate-- Abbie Eaton and Savannah Zimmerman, tie for top blue; Jem Dyer, red.
4-H in Action participants: Cody Cooley, crochet and knitting; Abbie Eaton, ice cream in a bag; Azery Gribskov, fingerknitting; Alexis Nortrup, potholders made on a loom; and Chloe Zimmerman, spinning.
Community Service: Alex and Katie Johnson--prepare stamps for shipment to help the less fortunate; Cody Cooley taught fair participants how to make beads with clay, some of which will be made into necklaces for bingo prizes for the local nursing home.
Taylor Eaton is the winner of the Incredible Zucchini contest sponsored by the Wahkiakum Food and Farm Network with her zucchini bread entry. Jem Dyer prepared a beverage to get a top score for the Grays River Grange award for the best use of Wahkiakum produce in a 4-H foods contest. 4-H member Cody Cooley is the recipient of the Ecology award, sponsored by 4-H alumni Katriina Ervest Timm, for his crocheted bag made from recycled plastic bags. Makayla Matthews produced the largest cabbage to earn the prize from the WSU Master Gardeners. Abbie Eaton's soft pretzels garnered her first place in the 4-H Wheat Award, with Makayla Matthews placing second. In the Open Youth, Rueben Patterson received both first and second place in the Wheat Award contest. Makenzie Matthews swept the Bob's Red Mill Awards with her baking.
4-H members participating in the State Fair are Cody Cooley, Abbie Eaton, Haley Footh and Alexis Nortrup who have sent still life entries.
