What's Happening at the Fair?

As reported in The Eagle, the construction of the new arena was dealt a financial blow last week when the remaining budget was reduced to $11,000. In order to ensure our fair proceeds as planned, the fair board and I are brainstorming alternative solutions, so that we are not solely reliant on the construction being completed.

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit this makes organizing the fair a challenge but over the years our little fair has bounced back from much worse, and looking at the bigger picture we must concentrate on ensuring the future of the fair for years to come.

The fair board will continue the planning meetings and as a result of the current situation, have decided to meet every two weeks. Come rain or shine, new arena or not, we will be ready and open for fun come August 20.

I must say thank you to our fantastic Builders club volunteers Brook and Zach Calvert. These two have been working hard, painting the ticket gates and helping plant new flowers, generously donated by the Cathlamet Kiwanis. Also on hand to lend some support is Reuben Patterson, weeding and helping our handyman Paul Lawrence as we prepare the fairgrounds for next months 101st fair celebration.

Animal entries are due next week! An entry form is included within the fair Premium Book and can be found on pages 86 & 87. All animal entries must be received by July 29. This year we’ll also be accepting emailed entries. Just scan your entry cards and email the jpegs to wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net. We’ll even send you a confirmation email so you can check all your details are correct. If you don’t remember your exhibitor number or if this is your first time showing at the fair (like me), you can call the office, 795-3480, or register for your exhibitor number when you drop off your entries.

The fair office is open Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Remember, this year we plan to issue the premium checks within two weeks of the fair, so if you want to get your check on time, make sure you write clearly and include all of the requested information. Only with your help will we reach our goal.

Attention all Horse Gate users! Due to the current construction, the Horse Gate will no longer be open for public access. Once the new arena is completed a new key will be made available to those interested in using the new facilities. Please note that the new yearly fee will be increased to $50 due to the enhanced arena.

If you’d like to become involved with the fair or have an idea on how the fair can be improved, please contact us. You can call, stop in or send an email, 795-3480 or wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net.
