Summer Reading to start at library July 8

Due to strong support from local businesses, civic groups and individuals, the Cathlamet Library's Summer Reading 2009 program will be expanded to include programs for three different age groups: preschool through second grade, third through fifth grade and junior and senior high.

Public library Summer Reading programs began based on the belief that summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially when it comes to reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but kids who continue to read actually gain reading skills, strengthen their vocabulary and often experience the benefits of reading for enjoyment for the first time.

This year at Cathlamet Public Library, the preschool through second grade group as well as the third through fifth grade group will meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, starting July 8 and concluding August 12. One group will meet in the main library and the other in the library meeting room. This year’s theme is “Be Creative @ Your Library.” Programs include stories, activities, treats and prizes. Each session lasts approximately one hour.

Participants are also eligible to attend a Cowlitz County Fair Kids’ Parade as well as a four-library (Castle Rock, Cathlamet, Kelso and Longview) Summer Reading picnic in Longview.

An independent Summer Reading program for junior and senior high school students also includes prizes. Two optional social activities will also be available to this group. Check at the library for details.

The library is located at 100 Main Street, above the old fire house. Summer Reading is open to residents as well as summer visitors. For questions, call 795-3254 or email connielib@centurytel.net.
