Board opens stadium bids

Wahkiakum School Superintendent Bob Garrett last week opened and read the bids for building new football grandstands, which were damaged by arson last winter.

The board received bids from three companies. The bids, ranging from $108,000 to $132,000, excluding taxes, will be reviewed by maintenance supervisor Bob McClintock. He will return his recommendation to Garrett for final approval before the July school board meeting.

In other business, the board accepted the retirement/resignation of long time bus drivers Jim and Carol Mast.

JAW/JCT Principal Theresa Libby thanked the board on behalf of the staff, for allowing the search for new reading adoption materials. One of the programs Libby said the staff has recommended is called Imagine It. She said the staff feels it has the components to challenge readers of all levels. The board authorized Libby to purchase materials for grades K-5.

Wahkiakum High School Principal Loren Davis announced the May students of the month, freshman Levi Cothren, sophomore Melissa Burchim, junior Andrew Weiler, and senior Blake Anderson. The Lions Club/KLOG senior is Stian Vik.

Davis said next year's sophomores, juniors and seniors have scheduled their classes for the coming school year. As of now, there are no classes that have over 30 students, he said.

Libby said her staff is busy preparing for the 09-10 school year. She reported there have been some schedule and staff shifts. “Teachers have been very understanding and helpful with the current budget cuts and uncertainty of the future.”

Nine students have been selected for next year's Sounders tutors. They are; Olga Tsybikova, Kyler McKinley, Maya Stanley, Madison LaBerge, Austin Good, Mason Mackey, Travis Wegdahl, Stephanie Moonen and Jade Havens.

Unlike other elective courses in which a student can change the class at the end of the quarter with written permission from a parent and okay from the teacher, Sounder tutors are committed for the entire school year due to the training involved.

Summer school is being offered for students in grades 2-8 who may need assistance with their math skills. Classes are the first three weeks in August, Monday through Thursday, and begin August 3. For more information, contact the district office at 795-3971, or contact Title I Coordinator Stephanie Leitz at sleitz@esd112.wednet.edu.

Because of scheduling conflicts, the August school board meeting has been changed to Monday, August 17, at 7 p.m. in the high school library. The next meeting of the board is July 22 at 7 p.m.
