WHS seniors earn scholarships

Members of the Wahkiakum High School Class of 2009 earned over $400,000 in scholarships, which were presented at last Friday's graduation ceremony.

Counselor Nancy Renner said she had challenged the class last fall to top the previous record, $208,000, and they put their minds to it and earned $406,750.

Following are the post graduation plans and scholarship awards which the students earned:

Blake Anderson--Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars (WDFS)/Mike Merriman Scholarship $1,000; Albert and Goldie Kehrli Memorial $500; WDFS/Timber Scholarship $1,000; AFSCME Local 1557 $400; Central Washington University Tuition Award, $4,800; CWU Deans' and Trustees' Award $9,600. He plans to attend CWU.

Jessica Asmus--WDFS/Fishing Derby and Car Show $2,000; I Have a Dream $8,000; Washington Governor's Award $20,000; Whitman College Passport to College, $34,000, and Loman-Douglas Scholarship $134,400. She plans to attend Whitman College.

Jasmine Bingham--WDFS/Fishing Derby and Car Show $2,000; Kelso Longview Elks $600; Washington State Elks $1,400; Elks National Foundation $4,000; Brigham Young University $8,580. She plans to attend Brigham Young.

Frank Bosch--Michael Gisler Memorial $1,000; University of Idaho Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Award $38,440. He plans to attend University of Idaho.

Abigail Burns--Wahkiakum Community Network (WCN) $1,000; Our Saviour's Lutheran Church (OSLC) $350. She plans to attend Washington State University.

Whitney Chaput--She plans to join the U.S. Air Force.

Amanda Collier--WDFS/Bank of the Pacific $2,250; KUKN Student of the Month $100; WSU Future Cougars of Color Award $4,000; WSU Achievement Award $5,000, C. Edwin and Marjorie B. Carlson Memorial $12,856. She plans to attend WSU.

Ebony Cothren--WDFS/Jones Scholarship $5,000; WDFS/Cathlamet Kiwanis $750; OSLC $350; IWA 3-11 International Woodworkers of America $500. She plans to attend Lower Columbia College.

Sara Cothren--She plans to attend LCC.

Samantha Cress--WDFS/Val Avalon Memorial $1,000 She plans to attend LCC.

Fabio De Leon--He will attend Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá, Colombia.

Shelby Deaton--WDFS/Fishing Derby and Car Show $1,000; WDFS/Cathlamet Kiwanis $750; OSLC $350; River Jordan Most Memorial $500; Kaiser Permanente Health Care Career Award $2,000. She plans to attend WSU.

Benjamin Doumit--WDFS/Fishing Derby and Car Show $1,700; Chris Grasseth Memorial $500; SW Mineralogical Society $500; Hancock Forest Management $500; Edwin and Esther Rettig $1,218; University of Idaho Leadership Award $2,000; WUE Award $34,160. He plans to attend Idaho.

Sarah Doumit--WDFS/Fishing Derby and Car Show $2,000; OSLC $350; Roy Burns Memorial $1,000; WSU Achievement Award $5,000. She plans to attend WSU.

Joseph Florek--He plans to attend Universal Technical Institute.

Chase Fritzie--He plans to attend LCC.

Joel Fudge--KUKN Student of the Month $100. He will join the U.S. Marine Corps.

Jake Goldsmith--He plans to attend WSU.

Matthew Harrison--He plans to attend Universal Technical Institute.

Danny Helms--He plans to attend Spokane Community College.

Lea Joell--WSU Future Cougars of Color $4,000; WSU Commitment Award $6,380. She plans to attend WSU.

Brady Johns--He is going into the labor force.

Jordyn Kaattari--She plans to attend LCC.

Kalisha Mace--WDFS/Wahkiakum Lions, Sid Parker Memorial $500; John Doumit Scholarship $500 She plans to attend LCC.

Samantha McClain - She plans to attend LCC.

Kara McElroy--OSLC $350. She plans to attend WSU, Vancouver.

Kristin Most – She plans to attend LCC.

Tanya Mouliot--American Legion $500. She is going into the labor force.

Kevin O'Connor – He plans to attend Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Rosemary Patterson – She plans to attend LCC.

Riley Prestegard--OSLC $350. He plans to attend Central.

Brittney Robbins--WDFS/Wahkiakum Lions, Sid Parker Memorial, $500; WDFS/Cathlamet Kiwanis $750; AFSCME Local 1557 $400; Wahkiakum County Fair Princess $1,000; Washington Award for Vocational Excellence $13,440. She plans to attend WSU.
