Wahkiakum School District board of directors acted on a variety of issues at their May 20 meeting, including:
--Wahkiakum High School Principal Loren Davis reported the April students of the month are Freshman Kyle Bergquist, Sophomore Phillip Doumit, Junior Erin Turner, and Senior Ebony Cothren. The Lion’s Club/KLOG Senior is Jake Goldsmith.
Six students earned a 4.0 Grade Point Average for the third quarter, and 48 students earned a spot on the honor roll.
The girl’s track team is the State 2B Academic Champions. The team of 16 had a combined GPA of 3.7. Davis said he hopes to get the team to Cheney May 20-30 for the awards ceremony.
GEAR-UP will be funded for another two years. Next year, the district will be getting $38,600 for future activities. There are still plans for this year’s GEAR-UP grant, including a trip to Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center in June and Cispus Leadership Camp in July.
Davis announced the ASB officers for next year. Andrew Weiler and Cody Olsen will return as president and vice-president, Jeff Vik was elected secretary, Halie Boyce as treasurer, Ashley Silva as assistant treasurer, and Nicole Hargrove as public relations manager.
The senior trip is at Great Wolf Lodge on June 8. Baccalaureate is June 10 at 7 p.m., and graduation is June 12 at 7:30 p.m.
--John C. Thomas Middle School Principal Theresa Libby said the ASB officers for the elementary/middle school are Dylan Hansen, president, Travis Wegdahl, vice-president, Brandon Burdick, secretary, and Shane Souvenir, treasurer. It is the first time in anyone’s memory they were all male, she joked.
The eighth grade moving up ceremony will be at 7 p.m. on June 11 in the middle school gym. The kindergarten morning class will have their ceremony at 10:15 a.m., and the afternoon class will have theirs at 2:15 p.m., also on June 11.
Other upcoming activities include, the middle school spring band/choir concert on June 3 at 7 p.m. in the high school gym, the eighth grade trip to Wild Waves is June 10, the third graders go to Lelooska on June 4, and the second grade travels to Cannon Beach on June 9.
--Superintendent Bob Garrett reminded the board of the three school board positions still up for election. Board members Lee Tischer, District 4 and Mike Quigley, District 3 will be running again for their positions. Interested parties need to contact Auditor Diane Tischer by June 1.
The next school board meeting is June 17, at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
