Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Following four months of extensive renovation work, the Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center will host a grand reopening celebration on May 9.
Originally built in the 1860s, the house which is now used as a museum, has received many additions, evolving over the last 149 years. The latest renovation concentrated on Julia Butler’s study, replacing the damaged roof and ceiling.
Center Director Kayrene Gilbertsen continues to be the driving force, working hard to ensure the Heritage Center is utilized. “The new roof and ceiling has greatly improved the study, helping the natural light from the garden patio compliment the many artifacts and memorabilia from Julia’s historic political career” said Gilbertsen.
The renovation was funded through last spring’s Blue Tarp fundraiser held at the Villa at Little Cape Horn. Donated to the Wahkiakum Community Foundation in 2004 by Julia’s son David Hansen, the Heritage Center provides a unique insight into one of the most influential women of the 20th Century.
The Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center is located in Cathlamet and is open to the public Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. The center can also be viewed by appointment and is available for meetings, conferences or special events.
