Port District 2 of Wahkiakum County has received a grant and contract with the SW Washington Workforce Development Council that funds hiring eight low income youth and young adults, ages 14-24.
The funding originated with the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. One half of the workers are to be still attending school and one half are to be no longer attending school. Foster students, unemployed workers, and homeless youth are examples of eligible applicants. To check eligibility and get started on the application process, go to http://www.jobeligibility.com. The web site will help applicants determine if they are eligible and take initial information to start the application process.
The Summer Youth Employment Program will last six weeks this summer, beginning on July 7. Workers will be paid $8.55 an hour, working three days a week on the job and also attending a work readiness training one day a week for a total of four work days per week. Job placements will be at Port 1, Port 2, St. James Family Center, the Town of Cathlamet and at Wahkiakum West Telephone Company in Rosburg.
