Hazardous waste disposal on Saturday

, 2009

Wahkiakum County residents will be able to dispose of household hazardous wastes for free this Saturday.

Workers from the Cowlitz County Solid Waste Department will be at Wahkiakum PUD parking lot on Division street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to collect the waste. The program is sponsored by the public works departments of Wahkiakum and Cowlitz counties and the state Department of Ecology. Assisting are volunteers from Washington State University Extension programs.

Wastes eligible for collection include paints, pesticides and herbicides, thinners, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze hobby chemicals, cleaning products, pool chemicals and toxic, corrosive or flammable materials.

Not eligible are wastes from businesses, farms, schools, churches; unlabeled products, empty paint cans, leaking containers, items large than five gallons or 50 lbs., explosives and ammunition, radioactive material, biological or infectious material, or hypodermic needles.

People should keep material in its original container, store it so it won't spill during transport, and leave children and pets at home.
