Lady Mules stop South Bend, face Napavine tonight

The Wahkiakum Lady Mules defeated South Bend 60-41 in the opening round of the girls Class 2B District Tournament.

The Mules ran to a 12-0 first quarter lead and were never threatened.

Shelby Deaton scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds and five steals to lead the Mules. Freshman Brieanna Olsen scored 14 points, Jordyn Wirkkala 10, Shelby Felton seven, Evelyn Clark and Rebecka Patching four each, Brianne Helms three and Blaine Land one.

Clark made seven steals, and Felton had five rebounds and five assists.

The Mules (12-9) take on undefeated Napavine in a district quarterfinal game tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m. in Rochester.

The Mules closed the regular season with a 63-51 loss at White Pass last Thursday.

The host Panthers led 18-15 after one quarter and 31-23 at halftime.

Deaton put in 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Wahkiakum fell to White Pass. Wirkkala added 10 points, Clark eight, Patching five, Felton and Kari Schillios four each, and Olsen three.

Wirkkala made six assists; Clark had six rebounds and six assists, and Schillios grabbed five rebounds.
