Mules 5th in Monarch wrestling tourney

This past weekend the Wahkiakum Mule Wrestlers competed in their first event of the season, the 3 Rivers Tournament at Mark Morris High School. The Mules finished fifth overall, and brought home six medals.

Medal winners were sophomore Ben Miles (125 lbs) who was 4th place, senior Joel Fudge (171 lbs) was 4th place, freshman Kyle Bergquist (140 lbs) was 3rd place, junior Jeff Vik (152 lbs) was 3rd place, senior Brady Johns (189 lbs) was 3rd place, and sophomore James Goldsmith (160 lbs) was 2nd place.

“The team was real aggressive to start the day,” said Mule coach John Hannah. “We started fast and strong, set a tone for the day, and were able to keep it going throughout the day.

“Coach Keith Burns and I were really impressed by Kyle Bergquist and Jeff Vik on the day,” said Hannah. “They both battled very hard, and were able to wrestle out of tough positions.

“We were also pleased with our returning lettermen, as they provided great leadership and showed our new comers how to compete.”

The wrestlers compete at Warrenton this Saturday at 10 a.m. and at Ilwaco on Tuesday. They host Tacoma Baptist on December 19 and the Down River Challenge Tournament on December 20 with action starting at 9:30 a.m.
