Mules, Comets qualify for cross country state

The Wahkiakum Mules finished second and the Naselle Comets finished third in last Saturday's Class B district cross country meet at St. Martin's College, Lacey.

Both teams qualified for the state meet this Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco.

Northwest Christian won the team championship with 18 points. Wahkiakum followed with 73, Naselle 80, North Beach 88, White Pass 104, Ocosta 161 and Adna 177. The top four teams advance to state.

Mule report

Because the top four boys teams advance to state, all seven Mules who competed on Saturday are headed to the Class 2B state championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco next Saturday.

"It was an absolutely outstanding day," said Mule Coach Mike Riley. "The kids were absolutely amazing. They had that hunger in their eyes. You could see it. I'm proud of their efforts."

The top 20 individual boy's finishers advanced to state, and four Mules made that cut to propel Wahkiakum to second place at the district meet.

Mule placings were 7. Bradley Pugh 17:23.86; 14. Connar Riley 18:05.89; 17. Kevin O'Connor 18:16.15; 20. Collan Riley 18.30.84; 34. Stuart Bosch 20:09.79; 40. Riley Prestegard 20:50.23, and 43. Ben Miles 21:14.42.

The Mule girls ran incomplete and did not have any individuals make the top 10 individual state cut.

"Both Jori McEntire and Amanda Collier gave their very best efforts as they both improved their personal records for a 3.1 mile run," Riley said.

McEntire placed 21st in 24:01.01, and Collier was 29th in 25:55.82.
