Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
There are only two days left until the 1st Annual Wahkiakum County Oktoberfest. Starting from 1 p.m. this Saturday, there will be live music, fantastic food and a well stocked beer garden. At 3 p.m. the Pumpkin Shot-Put competition will begin, promising to separate the men from the boys. Sausages, cider, cheesecake and more, with no entry charge, how can you afford to miss it?
The fair premium checks are out this week so get ready to splash out. We had a fantastic turnout this year and were delighted to issue the awards to our exhibitors. Thank you for helping to make our 100th fair a success.
The fair board and I are committed to the fair and despite the recent budget cuts, we are determined to fight to ensure we have a 101st fair.
In a community such as ours it is irresponsible to remove one of the safest and most positive outlets for our youth. The fair cannot survive without 4-H, and in turn, 4-H cannot survive without the WSU Extension.
If our main concerns for the youth of this county are drugs and alcohol abuse, how can we remove 4-H and the fair? The budget crisis isn’t going to go away but removing the WSU Extension, 4-H and the fair is short-sighted.
If Wahkiakum County’s youth has any hope of escaping the peer pressure of drugs and alcohol abuse, we need to look at the bigger picture. How sad that a county so rich in natural resources chooses to sacrifice it’s biggest asset, our children.
If you think the fair, 4-H and WSU are something to fight for, make your vote count at this year’s election.
