Another month past and where has the time gone? Well at WAKIHI time sure does fly by! It has been a busy place up at the highschool, between Friday night football games, volleyball matches during the week, homework and practices it's easy to see where time goes. Our mighty football had a great kick start to their season, bringing home the KM Trophy, and still are doing great with 3 wins under their belts. Every game our boys work hard till the end, they never give up, and the opposing team never goes home without exhaustion, as well as some bangs and bruises. If you haven’t had a chance to catch a game, this Friday is Homecoming vs. the PeEll Trojans, what better game to catch than that? This is the game to enjoy all those beautiful princesses, handsome escorts, and for you car fans all our local Corvettes parade around the track. Congrats to the Homecoming Court! Senior Princesses are: Shelby Deaton, Abby Burns and Jasmine Bingham, escorted by Riley Prestegard, Kevin O’Conner and Joe Florek. Junior Princess, Evelyn Clark, escorted by Justin McClain, Sophomore Princess, Jori McEntire, escorted by Jon McClain, and the freshmen Princess, Brianne Helms, escorted by Connar Riley. So come on out and enjoy the beauty and brawn of Homecoming!
Our Lady Mules are dominating the net this year as well. The season opener is this Thursday versus the Mossyrock Vikings. The road to state is looking very promising for these girls, they work so hard, and if you haven’t seen them play, their chemistry on the court is amazing. They have ruled all the non-league games, stepping up and showing those bigger one "A" and two "A" teams what a small town school can do. That shows a lot about their initiative to win, they want it and they are going to get it. So come catch Thursdays game against the Vikings at 7:00pm, in the highschool.
Cross Country seems to be that sport that gets shadowed by football and volleyball, but they put just as much time in and work just as hard. Not everyone can get out there and run a steady 3+miles, it takes a lot of will power and determination. Cross country meets are a hard to catch because they are usually earlier in the day and they are scarcely at home, but the Columbia River Invite is hosted in Wahkiakum on October 11, don’t miss out on this one and only time to see our great runners at work!
The week of homecoming is a crazy one at WAKIHI. Spirit Week takes place this week, every day is set to dress up in a different way. Monday is Clone day, people dress alike, Tuesday is Nerd Day, have your pocket protectors and suspenders ready! Wednesday is Animal Day,it gets viscious, Thursday is Cross Gender Day, the time to borrow my brothers clothes, and Friday is the infamous Red and Black Day, the chance to show off our Mule Pride. As well as dressing up everyday, we also have a daily assembly with a class competition. The winning grade gets a "Mule Power Point" which will tallied at the end of the year, ( by the way seniors are ahead! Woo hoo). Each grade is also designated a portion of the hallway to decorate. This years theme is cities, so Seniors decorated their wall like Seattle, Juniors have Las Vegas, Sophomores have New York and Freshmen have L.A. Walls are judged by the teachers on creativity, and how well they represent the theme. The winning wall is announced at the end of the week at the final assembly. Spirit Week is a blast, and it gives everyone a chance to be crazy, step out of the box and show their spirit!
Did you have a chance to see the Wahkiakum FFA logging rodeo last Saturday? If you don’t know what that is, its an event where several surrounding schools come to compete in different events, mostly pertaining to wood and logging. Advisor Kyle Hurley, keeps the kids busy, from axe throwing, to pole climbing, to log cutting. There is something for everyone to take part in.WAKIHI is known to excel in these events!
It is a WAKIHI tradition that the junior class plans and organizes the prom that is to be held in the Spring. This proves to be a very hard and stressful thing to do, there are a lot of things that have to be ordered, decided, set up and all this takes money. So throughout the year it is typical that the junior class is hustling to fund raise to make a good amount of money. They have decided to host a pie social at Hotel Cathlamet this Saturday the 4th from noon to 4. There will be lots of yummy pies, all flavors and free coffee! Whole pies are $10.00 each and slices of pie are by donation. If you can’t make it and still want to help out by donating your time, a pie, or a cash donation you can contact Jordyn Wirkkala at the highschool, 795-3271 or if it is after 3:00 p.m., at her home which is 795-6533. Your support would be greatly appreciated, by not just the junior class but the whole school for helping make prom a success!
All in all this past month has been a great success, and October will be just the same! I want to thank you the community for all the support in everything we do! Keep it up!
