Mules pick up wins in busy week

With the exception of their own Mule alumni, the Wahkiakum Lady Mule volleyball team fared well in competition this past week.

The Lady Mules lost a marathon match 3-2 to their alumni last Thursday. After two hours of play, the match stood 2-2, and the alumni pulled out a 15-13 win in the final game.

The Mules came out fired up Saturday at the Mossyrock Tournament and powered their way to claim the championship.

In pool play, they beat White Pass 25-13, Tenino 25-9, Morton 25-17, Pe Ell 25-18, Adna 25-14 and Mossyrock 25-14.

In the semifinals, they faced Mossyrock again and won 25-23, 25-14. In the championship, they beat Pe Ell 25-16, 25-19.

Coach Patty Anderson complimented the play of Shelby Deaton, who had 32 kills and 23 service points for the day; setters Paige Kehrli, 53 assists and 28 points, and Halie Boyce, 23 assists and 26 points; Sarah Doumit 27 kills and 25 points, and Blaine Land, 23 kills.

“The girls lit up the gym with their hitting and their defensive play,” Anderson commented. “They were outstanding.”

On Monday, the Mules swept the Naselle Comets 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 in a non-league match.

Brittney Robbins had 11 service points, and Jordyn Wirkkala made 10 points and six kills. Boyce made 11 assists.

“Our middle blockers, Deaton and Land, were outstanding,” Anderson said.

The Mules hosted Stevenson on Tuesday night in another non-league battle, and the visitors won 23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14.

Doumit made 12 kills, and Deaton had eight blocks and eight kills. Kehrli made 18 assists and 10 service points.

The Mules are at Mossyrock October 2 and host Adna October 7.
