Mule volleyball team has good experience

Excitement is in the air at Wahkiakum High School as the Lady Mule volleyball team prepares for its season opening matches.

Paige Kehrli, a first team all leaguer, will be leading the way in the setting position, said Coach Patty Anderson.

"Paige runs the floor well and is always an offensive threat," Anderson said.

Halie Boyce will be the second setter for the Mules.

"Both Paige and Halie will play right side and could shape up to be two of the strongest setters in the league this year," Anderson said. "Shelby Deaton, a second team all leaguer, will be starting at middle this year. Shelby will be critical in running the Mules quick attack. Rebecca Patching and freshman Blaine Land will be working to fill the other middle position. Rebecca has experience and Blaine has raw physical talent.

"Sarah Doumit will be our power house outside hitter. Sarah can really jump and was very impressive at team camp this year. Jordyn Wirkkala will be playing outside hitter and looked upon for her outstanding defense and serving ability.

"A player to watch this year is Brittany Robbins. Standing at 4'11", Brittany plays Libero (defensive specialist) and earned praise from college coaches at her camps this summer for her defensive skills. Samantha Cress will be playing right side this year. Samantha has a fantastic attitude and a very calm demeanor. She has the ability to play any position anytime. Ashley Helms will be back after sitting out a season from a knee injury. Ashley is an excellent defensive player but can hit the ball as well. This season also brings in a strong freshman contingent."

The Mules' first match will be Tuesday September 9 at home against Warrenton, with the junior varsity starting at 5:45 p.m. The alumni game will be on September 18 at 7 p.m.
