Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
A Wahkiakum celebration to coincide with WSU Statewide Harvest Days is to happen on October 4.
As a county wide historic view spotlighting rural America, the "Columbia River Country Days" event promises a broad range of interests centering on Cathlamet, Puget Island, Skamokawa, Grays River and beyond.
Wahkiakum organizers are working to start a celebration that will "Let Wahkiakum Shine" planning entertainments to include food and farm tours, harvest dinners and dances.
Cathlamet and Puget Island will be the scene of a tractor parade and mapped tours of farms in the area. Plans include an auction and market sale.
The Covered Bridge on Grays River will feature a lamplight dinner and a dance.
Noting the historical relationship between the Extension and the Grange in America, the Harvest Days celebration will benefit the Extension Service and all proceeds from the event will go to 4-H. Grays River Grange was responsible for bringing the first Extension agent west of the Mississippi to Wahkiakum County. Skamokawa Grange has made a commitment to the celebration. Volunteers are needed and ideas are appreciated. For more information contact Paula Carlson, Puget Island, 849-4000 or Carol Ervest, Rosburg, 465-2275.
