Longtime Skamokawa resident Arthur E. Peterson, age 80, died Monday evening in a car accident near Longview.
Known as Skamokawa Pete, Petersonwas an icon in the community and was the propritor of the Duck Inn.
According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, Peterson was driving westbound near Milepost 53 east of Stella when his 1986 Chevrolet Blazer drifted across the centerline and collided with an eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Express driven by Kurtis D. Chambers, 39, of Longview.
Peterson, who was wearing a seatbelt, was declared dead at the scene. Chambers and a passenger, Ronald L. Lowery, 32, sustained minor injuries.
The highway was closed until approximately 8:20 p.m.
A memorial service is planned for August 23, 1 p.m., at Skamokawa Vista Park.
