Local farmers market to celebrate agriculture

Two Islands' Farm Market will celebrate Washington Farmers Market Week from 3-7 p.m. this Friday at 59 W. Birnie Slough Road on Puget Island.

Governor Christine Gregoire has proclaimed August 3-9 as Farmers Market Week. In her proclamation, she states that agriculture is a cornerstone of the Washington State economy and that Washington's 125 farmers markets generate more than $55 million in sales that support farm families and local businesses and services.

“Farmers markets are important meeting places that contribute to the economic and social vitality of communities and the markets educate consumers about their food and where it comes from,” said Patrice Barrentine, WSDA Small Farm & Direct Marketing program coordinator.

Farmers markets have provided economic and market support for farms in the wake of this winter's floods in southwest Washington.

"Take a fun ride on the Trolley Wahkiakum from the marina to the market," said market manager Rob Stockhouse. The trolley leaves the Elochoman Marina at 3, 4, and 5 p.m.
