Port 2 okaysSvensen Park bid

Construction could start soon on Port District 2's Svensen Park on Puget Island's West Sunny Sands.

Port officials opened their one bid last week and accepted it; Cathlamet contractor Burns Construction bid $332,796 for the project. The district's design engineer estimated the project would cost $302,870.

Port Manager Steve McClain said he is looking for additional grant funding for the project and has been told additional funds are possible. If not, parts of the project could be cut.

"We've already cut out a proposed fish cleaning station," he said at Monday's meeting of the port commission. "We might have to pull the west parking lot, which we added to use the lots we acquired adjacent to the first property."

In other business, port Commissioners Carlton Appelo and Kayrene Gilbertsen are still soliciting candidates to fill the vacant position on the commission.

The position includes the Skamokawa and Grays River voting precincts, said port attorney Tim Hanigan.

If no one volunteers for the position by July 18, responsibility for filling it will pass from the port district to the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners.

Interested persons should contact the commissioners or McClain.
