Library receives $1000 grant

Cathlamet Library was recently notified that they are the recipient of a special Libri Foundation $1000 Books for Children grant. The Libri Foundation matched a contribution from the Washington State Library, using funds from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization which donates new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small, rural public libraries in the United States.

Two large boxes containing about 66 beautiful new books were delivered and are currently being catalogued and processed by volunteers so they’ll be ready for Summer Reading, which starts July 9.

According to the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University School of Education, numerous studies show that summer learning opportunities improve academic outcomes for youth. Early and sustained summer learning opportunities lead to higher graduation rates and better preparation for college. Summer programs have also been shown to positively affect children’s self-esteem, confidence, and motivation.

High-quality summer programs, such as a Summer Reading Program at your local library, keep students engaged in learning, teach them new skills and allow them to develop previously unseen talents. They allow children to form relationships with caring adults and help foster creativity and innovation. Stop by the Library for a copy of the Center’s tip sheet for parents titled "How to Make the Most of Summer: What Parents Can Do to Keep Kids Sharp Over the Summer” or visit http://www.summerlearning.org.

The library is especially busy this summer season, processing approximately 60 checkouts and returns for every hour open. Volunteers play a significant part in the success of the Library’s daily operations. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering at the Library, including the types of jobs available as well as hours involved, call 795-3452 during Library hours or inquire next time you come in.

The Library Board is also recruiting new members. You can learn more about this opportunity at the Library or by contacting Mayor Swart directly.

A few of the new adult non-fiction titles at the Library include: Room Full of Mirrors: A Biography of Jimi Hendrix by Charles Cross, Leap! What Will We Do With the Rest of Our Lives? (aimed at boomers) by Sara Davidson and What Happened: Inside the Bush White House by Scott McClellan.

Lori Wick’s Yellow Rose Trilogy has just come in. This consists of three titles by the author including: Every Little Thing About You, A Texas Sky and City Girl.

Some newly acquired DVDs include High Fidelity, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Lion King 1½.
